Now up and running, a new data dashboard is shedding light on the state of the California cannabis industry.
Earlier this year, the California Department of Cannabis Control unveiled four data dashboards that display licensing, harvest and sales statistics for the cannabis industry in the state. The data sheds light on industry trends, retail news and sales.
At a time when marijuana news and cannabis news are hot topics not only in California, but across the United States, the data offers valuable insight for entrepreneurs who are considering entering the market.
Reports That The Database Offers
There are four reports that the California Department of Cannabis Control offers on its website:
- Cannabis license summary report
- Harvest report
- Sales and price per unit report
- Monthly sales summary report
These dashboards use raw data from the DCC’s licensing and track-and-trace systems.
Cannabis License Summary Report
The cannabis license summary report shows the total count of cannabis licenses in the state, but users can filter the license types to see the total numbers for retailers, distributors, cultivators and manufacturers. Within those license types, there are additional subtypes, such as “Cultivation – Nursery” vs. “Cultivation – Specialty Indoor.”
Users can also see how many of the issued licenses are for adult-use versus medicinal, adult-use and medicinal, and other, as well as the licensing stage (provisional, annual or interim).
Harvest Report
This report comprehensively examines plant counts, waste weight, moisture loss, package count and other figures related to cannabis plant harvesting.
Users can search by county, license category or facility type, as well as by a frame of time like a month, quarter or year.
Sales And Price Per Unit Report
The sales and price per unit report shows total sales by year. Users can choose items like edibles, flowers, seeds and topical products to break down total sales in those categories. For a closer look at total sales, users can click on specific sales months or sales years.
This report shows total sales and price per unit information for categories like flower, pre-roll infused, vape cartridge and extract. The information available includes price per unit, total sales and the number of units sold.
Monthly Sales Summary Report
For a quick look at monthly sales, this report shares totals for each month over the course of the last few years.
For example, the summary report shows that over the course of four years, 2020-2023, the sum of monthly sales for the month of January was $1.45 billion. However, by clicking on a specific year, users can see January’s sales for that particular year. In January 2020, monthly sales were just over $214 million, while in January 2023, monthly sales reached nearly $407 million.
